Following a recent decision to seek alternative entertainment to shopping, I noticed I developed a slight interest in art. It’s mostly free, sometimes cheap, and in most cases does not need to be taken home. Located in the heart of central London, the Wallace Collection is a national museum which displays the beautiful works of art collected in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by the first four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, the son of the 4th Marquess. It was bequeathed to the British nation by Sir Richard’s widow, Lady Wallace, in 1897. Displayed at Hertford House, one of the family’s London properties in the nineteenth century, the Wallace Collection’s 25 galleries are unsurpassed displays of French 18th-century painting, furniture and porcelain with superb Old Master paintings and a world class armoury. The museum is also home to the Wallace Restaurant, which is open daily for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.
