Marie Esther Bangura for Madam Wokie & the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Updated: Jun 3, 2021

14 July 2019 was World Chimpanzee Day and so Madam Wokie is celebrating the amazing work of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which strives to conserve the wildlife, forests and ecosystem of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Thank you to the team at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary for your selfless service to our country, Madam Wokie looks forward to sharing your amazing work with our friends and guests from across the world.

This year the western chimpanzee has been named the official national animal of Sierra Leone. Unfortunately, they are also critically endangered, facing many threats including habitat destruction and poaching. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is dedicated to the protection and care of orphaned chimpanzees and the preservation of Sierra Leone’s wild chimpanzees through research, education, and outreach. The Sanctuary is currently fundraising to print posters and stickers about how the chimpanzee is the national animal to be posted around Sierra Leone. Please consider supporting Tacugama in its work to protect Sierra Leone’s chimpanzees. For more information or to donate click HERE.

The 100 acre Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is located 40 minutes outside of Freetown, in the hills of the Western Area Forest Reserve, 10 minutes past the historic mountain village of Regent.

It hosts two daily tours available: at 10:30am and 4:00pm, every day of the year.
