Updated: Apr 30, 2018

On Saturday 28 October, Sierra Leone fashion house, Madam Wokie, debuted its Nyapue Collection at the inaugural Bahamas Fashion Week, in Nassau, Bahamas. The collection featured fourteen couture pieces which were designed and produced in Sierra Leone. Speaking about the collection, designer Mary-Ann Kaikai, noted that the collection is dedicated to the Mende Women of Southern Sierra Leone; especially Madam Wokie Massaquoi, who is the inspiration behind the brand. She stated that “Mende women are among the most flamboyant women in Sierra Leone. Very well known for their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, they exude confidence, poise, and strength. Mende women are the pillars of their communities and their households, often entrusted with power to steer the next generation of change makers.” Here are some of the behind the scenes photos taken before the models hit the runway.

Madam Wokie’s participation in Bahamas Fashion Week was sponsored by Mutzig Lager Beer, in line with its objective of supporting young and enterprising entrepreneurs.
